4.0 earthquake shakes Maine, felt in Boston

9:05PM EDT October 16. 2012 - A minor earthquake rattled southern Maine this evening and was felt throughout New England.
Update at 8:40 p.m. ET: Nonplussed by the relatively small quake, some Twitterers have weighed in with a little humor:
Californians Declare 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake 'Absolutely Adorable.' @MrWordsWorth
Great earthquake of our time. @Ayo_61
Hour one after earthquake: food is low. Water is almost gone. Supplies on the verge if nothing. Survival is not likely. @billbro_baggins
Earthquake in Maine just felt in downtown Boston. I'm guessing tons of babies born 9 months from tonight. @ryanwhitney6
There was just an earthquake outside Portland, Maine. Look for Stephen King's 1000-page novelization, Doomquake, in bookstores tomorrow. @TheTweetOfGod
Update at 8:33 p.m. ET: Not surprisingly, the quake was also felt in Connecticut and Rhode Island, the Associated Press says.
Still no reports of any damage.
Update at 8:29 p.m. ET: The USGS has revised the quake's depth from 17 miles to 3 miles.
Update at 8:17 p.m. ET: The U.S. Geological Survey has again revised the magnitude, this time down to 4.0.
Update at 7:57 p.m. ET: Twitter users in Montpelier, Vt., reported "sustained shaking for 10 seconds," says the Burlington Free Press, published by USA TODAY's parent, Gannett.
The paper notes that Burlington and parts of Vermont were shaken last Wednesday by a magnitude-3.9 quake in Quebec.
Update at 7:40 p.m. ET: The USGS has revised the magnitude to 4.6 and the epicenter to 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, which is west of Portland. It struck at 7:12 p.m. ET.
Besides Boston, the temblor was felt in the Augusta-Waterville, Maine, area and in Montpelier, Vt., according to local news reports.
Original post: A magnitude-4.5 earthquake struck southern Maine shortly after 7 p.m. ET and was felt in Boston.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake, about 17 miles deep, was centered near Lake Arrowhead.
No reports so far of any damage.
The USGS says the New England region has "felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from infrequent larger ones since Colonial times. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in the region every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt roughly twice a year."

Scariest. Movie. Ever.

First of all, a disclaimer. I am a baby when it comes to scary movies. After Paranormal
Activity I had to sleep with a light on for four nights, no joke. But as scary as the Paranormal movies are, they are nothing when compared to The Strangers. I had even lost my voice by the time the credits started rolling. Not only from being frightened like a little girl, but because I was trying to scream directions at Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman even though I was as much in the dark as they were.

And that is exactly why The Stranges is such an effective horror film, it leaves you in the dark. No, I do not mean that the camera is constantly in the dark and things pop out to scare you like so many horror films being made. You, the audience, knows only as much as Liv Tyler or Scott Speedman about why these horrible people are terrorizing them. Writer and director Bryan Bertino is a craftsman of suspense and terror.

Bertino gives you just enough to keep you on baited breath without accosting you with cheap thrills. Tension builds to the breaking point as you know the strangers are in the house, but no idea where they are or when they will appear.

Tyler does a great job of capturing and portraying fear and she is the sole focus of the camera for much of the movie since Speedman’s character runs off alone (why do they always do that?!). Not once did I question that her fear was fake or over acted, nor did I question her motives like so many horror characters make you do.

A major reason why The Strangers is so effective is that the antagonists are just three people…. Three people in simply terrifying masks. A simple burlap sack over the male character with a crudely drawn mouth voids the character of any humanity and you believe he is truly capable of anything. The two girl strangers are adorned with basic plastic masks that give them doll-like characteristics and they are only slightly less terrifying than the male stranger.

Most of the scariest parts of the movie
come from long, drawn out scenes where little to no action is taking place. The worst, in my mind, comes when Liv Tyler is alone in the living room and looking out through the kitchen. She has heard a noise out of one of the windows and is trying to see through the glass. As she calls out asking if anyone is there, the burlap covered stranger steps out behind her in the living room and… just watches Liv without moving. She has no idea he’s there, and the audience has no idea what he is going to do.

The Strangers had me constantly on edge to the point of yelling without resorting to gore and cheap scare tactics that are so prevalent in horror films today. If you want a scare that is surprisingly real, turn to The Strangers and pray that nobody knocks on your door while you are watching it or you may accidentally shoot them with a shotgun.

Will All These “The Walking Dead”’s Fans Wait Till Next Halloween?!

In actual life apparently no one conceders that so called zombies really exist, but when it’s about entertainment, these beings entirely hold attention if is about zombie games, motion picture adaptations, zombie comics, or Halloween’s disguises. Last event that would defend this reality is the American TV show called “The walking dead”, whose first season has completed last week, and got the highest ratings of any basic cable show, of all times.

This show had its first showing on the AMC network on October 31, 2010 with a 70-minute first showing episode and today AMC and the producers are apparently repenting because it went for only six weeks. The point is that the medium number of spectators of this TV show was 3,5 millions and the anticipation for the season finale collected six million spectators, agreeing to the network. With this it got the highest valuation of any basic cable show, of all times, but it’s too crucial that the TV show was followed from the all-crucial 18-49 demographic. The ultimate episode of “Hannah Montana” had 10.7 million spectators but its public is under 18 years old, some final episodes of “The Sopranos” had about 13 million spectators but agreeing to all specifications, “Walking dead” is the greater followed drama TV show in principal cable history in the demographic.

“The Walking Dead” is set up on the comic book TV show with the alike heading, constituted by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, and broadcasted by Image Comics. It was adapted for TV by Frank Darabont and the capital players includes Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies.

It’s about post – apocalyptic horror fiction that succeeds a small gang of survivors. They go round the ruined United States, trying to find for a new home, seeking to break away from the stumbling group of the undead. The capital character, Rick Grimes, who was a sheriff's assistant before the zombie aggression, directs this gang that faces unbelievable things. From one side are the zombies but on the other side here are the massy leavings of suffering human masses. All the occurrences and the battle to remain alive pressures them to the very edge of lucidity. Along with the adventure there is a big human drama, treating difficult interpersonal relationships, that puts the show into more of an intellectual thriller type than an action adventure. There are some unambiguous scenes with blood and killing, but for the greater part the show is little about the zombies chasing brains and more about the individuals and their mental battles, battling with the probability that they might be the last few people on Earth.

The only suspicious thing is that the first season completed so not completed, leaving many open questions, and the audience needs to wait till next Halloween to see the new season…
